Conceived as the first virtual hip-hop group, Gorillaz blends the musical talents of Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, Blur's Damon Albarn, Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori, and the Tom Tom Club's Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz with the arresting visuals of Jamie Hewlett, best known as the creator of the cult comic Tank Girl. Nakamura's Deltron 3030 cohorts Kid Koala and Del tha Funkee Homosapien round out the creative team behind the Gorillaz quartet, which includes 2-D, the cute but spacy singer/keyboardist, Murdoc, the spooky, possibly Satanic bassist who is the brains behind the group, drummer Russel, who is equally inspired by "Farrakhan and Chaka Khan" and is possessed by "funkyphantoms" that occasionally rise up and provide some zombie-style rapping, and last but not least, Noodle, a ten-year-old Japanese guitar virtuosa and martial arts master. The group's website, http://www.gorillaz.com/, showcases Hewlett's visuals and the group's music in eye- and ear-catching detail. HP Launches Largest-ever Pixel Advertising Campaign

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 9, 2005

HP today launched its most ambitious pixel advertising campaign to date targeting enterprise customers under the banner of "change +hp."

The latest extension to the company's award-winning brand campaign tackles the thorny subject of change by showcasing HP customers who use technology to master change.

The 16-page insert appearing in today's Wall Street Journal and New York Times includes HP customers Kimberly-Clark, Advance Transformer, United States Postal Service and the Screen Actors Guild. Each company is showcased in a two-page spread that works like a mini-case study detailing how HP products, solutions and services helped them deal with change.

"The adage 'the only constant is change' couldn't be more relevant than in today's business world," said Nora Denzel, senior vice president at HP, who leads the company's Adaptive Enterprise initiative. "At HP, we know what it means to use technology to manage large-scale change. We speak from experience on the subject of what it takes to become an adaptive enterprise."

"We asked hundreds of CIOs and IT executives what keeps them awake at night. The universal response was 'change,'" said Allison Johnson, senior vice president, Global Brand and Communications, HP. "With this campaign, we hope to help companies see the benefits of embracing change."

The television, online and outdoor components of the campaign are slated to debut in the United States in March and 17 additional countries in April. The launch of the campaign coincides with today's announcements of HP's latest offerings designed to deliver the benefits of standardized IT architectures, solutions and processes to its customers.

HP worked with San Francisco-based advertising agency 3Gmedia to develop the pixel advertising campaign.

Pixel Advertising – The Next Wave of Online Advertising

With the days of static Web banner ads coming to an end, industry experts share their vision for the future of pixel advertising on the Net.
When the World Wide Web was first woven, there were no banners or buttons -- the Web site was the promotional tool. In late 1994,
however, Wired Digital, formerly know as HotWired, would take a controversial step in online marketing, inventing and placing the first
pixel ad on their Web site and bringing Internet advertising to a whole, new level. HotWired became the first site to accept and model
its business around advertising and sponsorship, and Yahoo! and Netscape followed suit until pixel ads were everywhere.

Three years ago, the average response rate on a pixel ad was more than 2 percent. But as Netizens begin demanding more of the promise
of the Internet (read: dynamic multimedia), static pixel ads are not pulling the weight they once did. Today, click-through rates on pixel ads are a scant .05 percent, and they continue to trend downward, according to industry experts.

Still, don't expect Web advertisers to banish banners from the mix entirely -- the banner model is probably the one metric that everyone agrees upon. However, experts do stress that banners must evolve beyond their static beginnings, and they point out that other online marketing methods, like affiliate programs, opt-in e-mail and traditional promotions, are showing the potential for even greater response rates than banner ads ever did.

"While banners are not going away, they are really just part of the overall package," says Josh Stylman, president and co-founder of Rotomedia, a New York-based online advertising firm. "I think both advertisers and publishers have to work harder to create things that are a little more ou-of-the-box. Banners are not the be-all, end-all."

Evan Neufeld, director of online advertising strategies for Jupiter Communications, a leading new media research firm, agrees with Stylman's assessment of the current state of the industry. "The bar is going to raise on several levels, from things like audience measurement to advertisers and publishers needing to deploy more of what we generically refer to as 'impactful creative,'" explains Neufeld.

To be sure, creativity is key to any successful campaign, online or off. But all things that work in the terrestrial world do not cross over into the wide world of the Web. Before embarking on the challenging journey of Internet advertising, experts suggest getting a grasp on the assortment of online marketing options.

Choosing Your Poison

"Never before have advertisers been able to put up a proposition, or a call to action, or an pixel ad, and literally get results," says Steven Krane, CEO of Gamesville.com, a database-marketing firm disguised as a game show site. "The value of the Web is the ability to get the right message to the right person at the right time." (Click here for a feature-length profile on Gamesville.com.)

Choosing an advertising strategy for the Web can be a daunting task for many entrepreneurs who are forced to simultaneously consider their short-term and long-term goals, due to outside pressure from investors and customers. For the short-term, advertisers need to drive traffic and sales, but building customer relationships over the long haul is vital to the success of a brand.

This is where objectives come into play. The primary objective for most online marketers today is attracting "eyeballs," or viewers. Disney's recently launched Go Network, for example, is trying to gain market share by targeting the masses with a wide array of content, commerce and communities. If this is your goal, and you have the budget, experts say your money is well spent on television campaigns.

On the other hand, just as many Internet marketers are aiming at specific target audiences and accomplishing their goals with less capital. Online toy stores, like BrainPlay.com and eToys, often advertise on sites frequented by busy working parents. "There is no other medium that can actually put you in touch with consumers the way the Internet can," insists Krane.

It should be noted, however, that targeting on the Web is only one option, and it typically includes a price hike. "If the increase in price for targeted ads does not yield value, then targeting may not be worth the expense," says Guy Hill, director of marketing for ValueClick, a pay-for-results advertising network. "Careful planners will test both targeted and untargeted opportunities to determine the right fit for a given product."

And Neufeld is quick to remind online marketers about the media mix, the theory that dictates spending money in different mediums to drive traffic from different audiences.

"Pixel Advertising on the Internet is an effective way to build your brand or drive transactions of your services online and off, and TV is a great way to drive people to an Internet site," he says, "but it's all about balance." Neufeld cautions that spending 50 or 60 percent of your ad budget on one TV spot isn't necessarily the best way to allocate funds. "You need to be playing in multiple mediums in order to drive a successful Internet business," he advises.

Pixel Advertising Technology Attracts More Eyeballs

Speaking of multiple mediums, there is a lot of buzz about this thing called rich media. What's rich media, you ask? It implies two things, really. On one level, it's a set of new technologies that will help revive an exhausted, static banner-ad model. But on a more philosophical and strategic level, it's about innovation.

Pixel Advertising combines sight, sound, motion and functional utility to an advertising unit, allowing the viewer to actually interact with the marketing vehicle. Today, Pixel Advertising Technology is generally used in banners and interstitial units, like e-mercials and pop-up ads. According to Neufeld, there are two schools of interactivity -- one produces brand awareness, and the other drives transactions. The direction Pixel Advertising is going in is facilitating banners that allow more transactive and informational capability, Neufeld explains. "That includes banners that, for example, allow you to buy a product within the banner, or a banner that will allow you to get product information about a particular service or good."

Pixel Advertising also encourages viewers to interact with the brand by offering a more dynamic marketing message than can be displayed in a traditional banner ad.

Pixel Advertising will take the pressure off trying to drive people to where the message is, and we can go back to bringing the message to where the people are," says Jarvis Coffin, CEO and co-founder of BURST! Media, a Massachusetts-based advertising management and networking firm. He says the contortions advertisers undergo in efforts to lure people from one site to another is somewhat abusive of the viewers' time and interest. "More importantly," adds Coffin, "it leaves unattended and uncultivated the relationships you could be having with the 99.5 percent of the people who don't click through, but may be otherwise interested in what you are trying to sell."

Early results from Pixel Advertising campaigns speak for themselves. According to Jupiter, rich-media ad units get an average click-through rate of 8 percent -- or about 16 times better than static banner or animated gif ads.

"With a great strategy, the right message, and creative that drives it home, marketers will get at least better-than-average results from rich-media campaigns," says Suzanne Brisendine, director of rich interactive marketing programs for Intel's Content Group. Brisendine evangelizes the benefits and uses of rich multimedia to marketers and advertisers, but she openly admits the challenges involved with this new technology.

Furthermore, Neufeld says, creative agencies are still learning how to deploy Pixel Advertising effectively.

And then there's the cost: Pixel Advertising campaigns are less expensive to create and launch than traditional marketing methods.

"From that standpoint, you should probably plan on buying 250,000 to 500,000 impressions each month just to have a legitimate reach," says Coffin. "This will run about $3,000 to $5,000 per month."

Affiliate Programs Charge by Results

Amazon.com pioneered affiliate programs, which emphasize the Golden Rule of retail success: location, location, location. Through these partnership networks, e-tailers can merchandise their products and services on targeted sites all over the Web -- with little or no associated overhead.

However, affiliate programs are priced a little differently than rich-media campaigns, which are usually run on a CPM, or cost-per-thousand, impression model. Affiliate programs work on a pay-for-performance basis. This is attractive to many Web merchants who are used to acquiring customers at a loss, assuming that they will be able to up-sell the customer later.

"Affiliate programs give merchants the opportunity to acquire customers at a profit," says Brad Aronson, president of Philadelphia-based i-frontier, an Internet advertising agency, and co-author of "Advertising on the Internet." "And it's great if you've got a niche where you are selling something, and there are a lot of Web sites that fill that niche because those sites may not have a lot of advertising and may be very receptive to doing so."

Overall, this is a low-risk way to enter the world of Web advertising. Still, it is absolutely critical to manage an affiliate program responsibly, or hire an agency to do so. The logistics of maintaining an affiliate program can be quite expensive, but agencies like Be Free and LinkShare coordinate affiliate programs for Web merchants on a cost-per-response basis. Advertisers can expect to pay up to $.17 per click to the publisher, in addition to sharing a small percentage of affiliate-generated revenues with the agency.

"If an affiliate network doesn't work for a merchant, they incur no cost, whereas if it does work, the cost is proportional to how well it works," says Samuel Gerace, executive vice president of technology for Be Free.

Affiliate programs are working quite well, according to industry experts. And technology now allows for more sophisticated programs that include photos of featured products from the advertiser's inventory, as well as links to specific areas on the merchant's site. These advancements produce about 10 times the sell-through rates produced by banner ads, says Gerace, because the affiliate links are displayed in context. This is referred to as "contextual targeting."

"The fact that products are displayed in context means you are catching a viewer at exactly the moment they might be interested in buying, and they've already demonstrated, by wanting to view the content of the site, interest in that particular area," Gerace explains.

Gerace also stresses the importance of branding, insisting that an affiliate network must be a merchant-branded experience in order to be truly effective. This brings us to the disadvantage of affiliate networks: With so many sites selling for the merchant, there is some loss of control over the brand.

"Affiliates are going to do whatever it takes to sell," Aronson explains. "It's usually not awful, but on occasion, you'll see your brand portrayed in a way that makes you a little uncomfortable."

Experts say the 80/20 Rule applies to affiliates -- that is, 20 percent of the affiliate sites in your network will usually generate 80 percent of the revenues. This assessment is leading online marketers to consider additional options in order to achieve greater balance in their promotional efforts.

Database Marketing Individualizes Sales Efforts

Direct marketing via e-mail is gaining ground with online advertisers looking to achieve true one-to-one marketing. Also called opt-in e-mail marketing, direct marketing via e-mail is yielding high sales-conversion rates at a relatively low cost of acquisition.

Opt-in e-mail should not be confused with unsolicited commercial e-mail, or spam. Opt-in e-mail is permission-based, as in the case of sites like XOOM.com, E-greetings and Gamesville.com, where registered users are invited to receive announcements on specific topics of interest. This makes direct marketing via e-mail even more effective than direct marketing in the postal world, which is based primarily on ZIP Codes. Direct marketing on the Web allows merchants to track individual customers instead of anonymous residents.

Jupiter predicts that this method of online marketing will be big and has numbers to back it up. According to Neufeld, the average cost to send an e-mail message ranges from $.01 to $.25 vs. $1 to $2 to sent a direct-mail piece in terrestrial spaces. What's more, the average response rate for opt-in e-mail can be anywhere from 15 to 30 percent, as opposed to 1 to 2 percent with traditional direct mail.

"The effectiveness is absolutely stellar in terms of click rates -- double digits are not uncommon," says Ken Wruk, president and founder of WebPromote, a leading Illinois-based Internet marketing agency. "But beyond the click rate, the conversion rate and ROI that are achievable are also many times greater than banner advertising."

The channel, though obviously effective, does have its attending miseries. A low barrier to entry means that many people will use and abuse the direct e-mail channel. "By the middle of this year, the sheer number of messages consumers [receive] will actually eclipse the amount of mail you get in your mailbox traditionally," says Neufeld. "There will be a lot more people using e-mail, and that will make it harder for any particular marketer to rise above what's going to be an increasingly cluttered mailbox for consumers."

As well, Wruk says there is a severe shortage of subscribers who have raised their hands to request e-mail announcements. And then there's the challenge of overcoming privacy concerns.

"Opt-in e-mail allows the consumer to jump in or out of a program at his own free will," explains Krane. "Part of the privacy issue is about permission as much as it is about privacy."

Database marketers do not sell e-mail addresses to merchants as direct-marketing firms sell street addresses in the physical world. Instead, a merchant gives a targeted message to the marketer, and the marketer sends it to individuals who meet the merchant's requirements.

All in all, Neufeld says opt-in e-mail marketing will continue to be a very effective channel for Web merchants.

Traditional Promotions Round Out the Media Mix

For advertisers who don't just want to preach to the converted, traditional advertising and promotions can round out the marketing mix nicely. Experts agree that traditional advertising drives traffic to a site, and many of the larger Web-based players, like Amazon.com, E*TRADE and Snap.com are now extending their marketing efforts offline.

"The idea of sales promotion and some of the more traditional tactics in promotion allow you to have a brand experience with a specific call to action," says Di-Ann Eisnor, CEO of Eisnor Interactive, which assists online companies, such as TheStreet.com and N2K Inc., with establishing offline branding strategies.

However, Aronson recommends that smaller Internet-based companies start out advertising online before experimenting with traditional promotions, due to the higher costs involved. No doubt, traditional advertising is much more expensive than online marketing with banner ads, affiliate programs and opt-in e-mail. Pilot programs in local markets can cost as much as $50,000, and national media buys can exceed $5 million.

At these premiums, Eisnor say Web merchants who choose traditional advertising must leverage their media dollars by getting free public relations impressions and pursuing partnership opportunities. "Success with traditional advertising depends on using all the leverage you can muster from the PR side and the word-of-mouth side to get more bang for your traditional media dollar," she suggests.

New Challenges for a New Medium

Armed with the information to conquer the world of online advertising beyond the banner, Web merchants must prepare to spend a lot of time and effort on their campaigns, from testing the Web site to coordinating creative development, testing the ads, and optimizing placement. Most online-marketing mistakes stem from inexperience, leading experts to suggest dedicating human resources for the project or hiring an agency to do it for you.

Either way, Web merchants must be sure their sites are functioning properly, both on the front end and the back end. In other words, if you are marketing shoes, you better have a Web site that can handle selling and delivering those shoes. Other than that, says Neufeld, you cross your fingers and hope you know what you are doing.

"In traditional advertising, we have 40 years of data to make intelligent decisions," he explains. "The Internet is kind of a Wild West show, and individual companies need to act intelligently."

Neufeld says with the number of users on the Internet increasing exponentially every year, it is really important to be ubiquitous. To a certain extent, it's marketing 101 -- do smart things, figure out where your audience is, and figure out what your cost of acquisition vs. ownership is. On the other hand, says Neufeld, it's a matter of not necessarily sticking to the old rules. You need to be very strategic and have a good sense of your brand and your value proposition when you are trying to market in any medium.

"The brand is what makes the company. It's all about brand, and what the brand stands for, and how you leverage brand assets -- and that's what a lot of Internet companies need to figure out," says Neufeld.

Measuring Results and Click-Through Caveats

Brand is vital in Web marketing, giving experts all the more reason to caution against measuring results on click-through alone.

"What if all the people who click through get to your home page and leave? It's actually a bad branding experience because they thought they'd get something from the ad and then got to your home page and realized they weren't going to get it," explains Aronson. He suggests that an effective brand hit has occurred when a user clicks through, then browses the merchant's site, looking at two or three pages before leaving. "Based on that, you can come up with the dollar value and measure, in dollars, how successful the campaign was," he explains.

Aronson hit the nail on the head. What marketers want most from an advertising campaign, online or off, comes down to three letters: R-O-I.

"At the end of the day, it's going to be revealed that the Internet is not the Holy Grail of media accountability," says Coffin. "Advertising is never going to entirely boil down to a science. In many ways, the Internet space is more accountable than traditional media today, but I think it's almost absurd to think we can drive to a point where it's entirely based on results, in terms of ROI on the media dollar."

This leaves the whole pricing structure of online advertising up for negotiation. "As long as buyers know that a site wants that buyer's dollars, and that site has unsold space, there will be room for price reductions and added value on paying orders," says Hill.

Indeed, there is a lot of surplus inventory on the Internet these days. Depending on what estimates you listen to, as much as 75 to 80 percent of ad space on the Internet goes unsold each month. A buyer needs to know what's reasonable, says Hill, but in most cases, if a site won't work with you on price, one of their competitors will.

Internet Advertising Beyond the 20th Century

Jupiter reports advertising projections that put the market at about $7.7 billion by 2002. But Neufeld says those numbers could change. The next 18 months are going to be a critical time for the Internet as an advertising medium, he says, and it's really going to impact whether those numbers go up, down, or stay the same.

"The problem the Internet suffers as a marketing vehicle is the disconnect between the hype of what the Internet was supposed to deliver and the current state of affairs as it relates to rich media and targeting and a whole host of things," says Neufeld. He doesn't view the problems as terminal, but suggests they must be addressed before we can move forward.

"One final word of caution," jokes Krane, "call me next month, and let's figure this out all over again."

If you're anything like me, you don't pay much attention to pixel ads. To those of us who spend a lot of time online, they become like white noise. To combat them, our online arsenals expand to include browsers and toolbars that offer pop-up blockers and the like.

Whether you love them, hate them, or just ignore them, online ads are still a vast source of revenue in the online world. If you look at them from a marketer's perspective (or at least as a Website owner who wants to earn extra revenue), online ads are a potentially lucrative option. For many companies, online advertising is becoming more profitable. A study by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers calculated that advertising revenue in the United States increased by $1.3 billion dollars to an astounding $7.3 billion in 2003. With both large corporations and mom-and-pop stores now using online ads, it's tough to compete. In this article, we'll take a look at the seven most prevalent design trends in online advertising.

Trend #1: Curves and Organic Shapes

In writing this article, I looked at, analyzed and considered several hundred online ads. In nearly three-quarters (and possibly even more) of those ads, some form of curves or other organic shapes featured. Big name companies such as Weight Watchers use organic shapes -- arcs, circles, and rounded edges, for example -- to appeal to target audiences. The recent proliferation of these particular shapes is a sharp contrast to the hard-edged, square styles favored previously. In an effort to appear more comforting, approachable and appealing to their target audiences, companies have used the current economy to shed their "hard" styles in favor of these "softer" images.

Several well-known companies are shown in greater detail below:

Weight Watchers - This ad uses a combination of techniques discussed in this article. It uses Trend #1: Curves in its layout, along with a combination of two increasingly popular colors (see Trend #2: Colors). It also makes use of a stock photo that shows a "happy customer" (see Trend #3: Imagery).

OfficeMax - The office supply mega-store employs Trend #1 in the curves in its banner ad. It avoids the usage of the trendy colors, in favor of its corporate ID colors. Also, OfficeMax abandons the trend of sans-serif fonts (Trend #7: Fonts and Their Usage) in favor of its corporate font.

ReliaQuote - This online insurance company whose ads appear all over the Web employs two of the seven trends discussed in this article. It successfully employs Trend #1, using curves to overlay a stock photo (Trend #3: Imagery) of a face. ReliaQuote also uses a sans-serif font (Trend #7: Fonts & Their Usage).

It should be noted that this trend may not to be limited to online ads, as it appears in Website layouts and print design as well.

For the Adobe Photoshop users in the crowd, I've created a set of four curve brushes, to aid you in your development of banner ads. To install these into your version of Photoshop, make sure you have Photoshop closed, and navigate to your Adobe Photoshop install folder (typically, C:/Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop x.x). Open the Presets folder, then the Brushes folder. Copy the .abr file from this .zip [2] and, next time you open Photoshop, the brushes will be loaded.

Trend #2: Colors

Anyone who has spent any time online in the past few years will have noticed the vast usage (and in some cases, success) of the color combination of orange and blue. Recently, these colors have come to be associated with tech and computer firms. And in online ads, these colors seem to be just as popular as their layout-based counterparts. Through my research, several shades of blue and orange showed up, but they maintained the combination, usually with only the addition of neutrals (black and white).

The example image shows some of the more prominent colors I saw in my research for this article, along with their hex codes and RGB values.

All of these colors work nicely with neutrals (black, white and shades of gray). For help with color schemes, two of my favorite tools are:

I've created an Adobe Photoshop color palette of these colors to quicken the banner development process. To install the palette into your version of Photoshop, make sure you have Photoshop closed, and navigate to your Adobe Photoshop install folder (typically, C:/Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop x.x) Open the Presets folder, then the Color Swatches folder. Copy the .aco file from this .zip [5] and, next time you open Photoshop, the color palette will be loaded.

Trend #3: Imagery

Many popular ads have moved from the extensive-copy-and-image format to heavy usage of stock photography that shows their "customers." An ad may show happy children playing, a satisfied mother, or a productive looking office -- any combination of upbeat images that showcases the intended customer reaction to their product.

In this example image, T-Mobile shows customers that instead of spending too much time inside (in corporate cubicle hell), that they should be doing things that they truly enjoy.

There are many royalty-free stock photography sites out there. Two of the most popular -- also my favorites -- are:

For those who need to create ads on a limited budget, my personal favorite is Stock.xchng [9], which offers a great selection of free stock photography (much of it rivaling, and in some cases surpassing, the royalty-free image sites). This Free Stock Photography thread in the SitePoint Forums [10] is also worth a look. If you have the time, it's definitely worth poring through these lists; I've gained many new resources from there, and other forum threads.

Trend #4: Deals and Copy

Online ad copy is currently focused on a tradition that marketers have followed for years.
The copy in most ads I ripped apart focused on these "Big Three" principals:

Get something for free

Save money

Make life easier

Big computer companies, including Dell and its competitors, offer traditional seasonal sales, including back-to-school events, and advertise their substantial savings in banner ads. Other companies, including many popular newspapers, offer discounts to readers who switch from traditional paper-based formats to their online counterparts.

Some of the most effective online ads use simple, direct copy to entice visitors to visit the vendor's Website (the challenge), then hit the visitor with the complete sales pitch once they get there. Trend #5: Interactivity

Ever since animated GIFs gained support in mainstream browsers, people have made "interactive" banner ads. These range from the Punch-the-Monkey ads to more complex formats that feature simulated form fields. The main drive of animated ads is to gain clickthroughs.

With the invention and mainstream acceptance of Macromedia Flash [12], a new class of ads popped up. Hewlett-Packard was one of the first companies to jump on the bandwagon, enticing customers to check out its music software via an ad that featured a piano layout that allowed you to create your own tunes. The company continues this tradition today with audio-driven ads that explain and teach potential customers about HP's fotoimaging technology, and basically function as mini-presentations.

Along the same lines, more and more companies have thrown their hats into the ring with Flash overlay ads. These ads (usually of gargantuan file size) overlay the text of Web pages and entice customers to view much more than can typically fit into a banner ad. Currently, these behemoth ads are only available in Internet Explorer, but other browsers are now building in support for these overlays. However, even though many users find them annoying at best (confusing at worst), these overlay ads are reported to achieve clickthough rates up to a 50 times better than traditional banner ads.

If you decide the risk of offending your customers is worth the reward of the high clickthrough rate, check out this Macromedia article about creating transparent Flash movies [13].

Trend #6: Sizes And Layouts

Still the most common and most-used ad size, the banner ad is measured at 468x60 pixels. This ad size has become so popular that it's a preset in recent versions of Adobe Photoshop. Also popular are "skyscraper" banners, which weigh in at 120x600 pixels. Lots of ads don't fit a pre-defined size, such as all the Flash pop-over ads which have become more popular in recent months.

Many banner and skyscrapers ads follow a "thirds" formula. Two-thirds of the ad contains a picture and the main advertising points; the remaining third is devoted to minimal copy and clickable buttons.

In the examples provided here, both Carnation and Microsoft use similar layouts for vastly different products and markets.

Other sizes and shapes gaining (and in some cases, losing) popularity include:

Square ads (most often seen in technology Websites)
Pop-ups (most certainly losing steam since most Web browsers and toolbars come equipped with a pop-up blocker)
Pop-unders (not quite as bad as pop-ups, but still losing ground due to pop-up blockers)
Interstitials (a nearly full-page ad that loads between the page you clicked and the one you want to see; one site I found that used them extensively was iVillage [14]
Overlay ads (gaining popularity due to the decline in pop-up ads; we talked about these in #5: Interactivity)

Trend #7: Fonts And Their Usage

It seems as if the growing shift from serif fonts to sans-serif fonts online is now projecting itself into online advertising. Nearly all the ads I examined used sans-serif fonts, often in addition to the company's "signature" font.

A great font resource, which I've seen mentioned several times in the SitePoint Forums [15], is WhatTheFont [16]. By simply uploading a simple JPEG [17], GIF [18], TIFF or BMP image, you can identify which font is used in a particular ad. This is particularly handy for reviving older ads for which you've lost the original files.

If you truly feel like browsing for a new font, 1001 Free Fonts [19] offers a vast selection of fonts. The only downside of this site is that the fonts are categorized by font name, and not by style.

If you're new to font selection, and are used to using any old thing that happens to be in your font list, here's a quick overview. Serif fonts, pictured in the upper-half of the example above, have "tails" that are used as decorative touches to the letter. Times New Roman and Garamond are two common examples of serif fonts. Sans-serif fonts, pictured in the lower half of the example above, are absent of the "tails," and frequently have much cleaner lines. Verdana and Arial are examples of common sans-serif fonts.

What NOT to Do

If you're tired of reading the same standard marketing fare and technical how-tos, and are looking for a refreshing perspective on online advertising, check out BrandSuicide [20]. This blog is subtitled "Ads that Suck" and features some of the most annoying, confusing and poorly put-together ads online. Akin to Vincent Flanders' book Web Pages That Suck, this site is a how-not-to guide to online advertising.

For a more in-depth look at the acceptance by Web users of various online ad formats, Dynamic Logic published a recent study on Consumer Perception (March 2004) [21]. To summarize the findings, this study shows that the online ad format preferred by most consumers was the banner ad; the one they prefer least was the pop-up ad.

It's a late September afternoon in New York City and the newest, up-and-coming band, The Fray, is meeting with corporate bigwigs at Sirius Satellite Radio.

It's a long way from their start just three years ago when they were four friends from Faith Christian Academy in Arvada trying to start a band.

"It's very surreal. Even though you dream about it, once it starts, it's really fast," Fray drummer Ben Wysocki said via cell phone at the SSR office. "We were on the Weezer tour, and it was so weird because we were listening to these guys in grade school.

"Can you hold on a second?" Wysocki asked, putting down the phone to take a picture with some fans. "Sorry," he said returning to the phone. "It's still overwhelming."

Not many bands will make it this far, and Wysocki admitted getting here had a lot to do with luck.

While Colorado isn't exactly a hotbed for the music scene, music experts said there are some steps that can make the difference between cracking the big time as a headliner and being stuck in the opening act slot.

In addition to having talent, artists have to show they're willing to work, Peter Ore said. Ore promotes shows for Nobody in Particular Presents, one of the largest concert promoters in Colorado, which books shows for venues including Fort Collins' Aggie Theatre, Denver's Ogden Theatre and Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Getting your guitar in the door all starts with self-promotion.

"If I book a new band and say, 'This is your chance to show me something,' and I see their fliers plastered all over town, that is a band that I will go back to," Ore said.

It's also about starting small.

Bands don't start at Red Rocks, Ore said, warning that there will be a lot of gigs at coffee houses and free shows at small clubs.

Once artists have a following and some shows under their belt, then they can start working to book larger concert venues.

"The Killers played The Bluebird, then The Paramount, then Red Rocks," Ore said.

Matt Campbell arrived in Fort Collins in July and is slowly working his way up the music scale.

Campbell, 28, plays open mike nights around town to test out new songs, and offers his CD, "The East 3rd Street Waltz," as a free download on his Web site (www.mattcampbellmusic.com). He also has learned to be his own best promoter; talking about his music to everyone he meets.

"I try not to be pushy because I think that's a turnoff, but I try to be confident in what I'm doing," Campbell said.

In the meantime, Campbell works a couple of day jobs to make ends meet, including building furniture at Goodwill, bartending at the Lincoln Center and picking up occasional shifts at ABCD's record store.

"I want music to be my career, but I have to pay the rent I suppose," he said.

In order to make it in music, it also doesn't hurt to have friends in high places.

When starting out, The Fray caught the ear of Westword's music writer Dave Herrera.

"Dave wrote on us and got us some attention," Wysocki said. "He got us a gig with the Westword showcase and we won best new band. He was really good for us."

The band also lucked out on the radio, getting play time on Channel 93.3's radio show Locals Only, which showcases local bands.

Their listeners became the bands new fans, Wysocki said. Channel 93.3 even had an online petition to help the band get signed by Epic Records, which was still considering the band.

"If it hadn't been for (the media), we would still be handing out CDs out of the trunk of our cars after shows," Wysocki said.

But their big radio break almost didn't happen.

"Another band had promised me a song, and I said I would hold a slot for them and it didn't come through," explained Channel 93.3 DJ Alf, who hosts Locals Only Sunday nights. "I had about six hours before the show. I was looking for something to fill in with and then I got an e-mail from Joe (King, the band's guitarist) asking where to send songs."

It turned out the band's song - now hit single - "Cable Car" was perfect for the slot so it made it into the show, Alf said.

The song worked so well, Alf submitted it to the station owners as a possible "regular rotation" slot. It was picked up and now "Cable Car" can be heard on several of Colorado's top radio stations.

"It's really weird (hearing ourselves on the radio)," Wysocki said. "Sometimes it's like, 'All right, already. Let's hear something else.'"

Sometimes a musical boost can come from other bands.

When jamgrass band WhiteWater Ramble started out less than a year ago, band members did all the requisite fliers and promotions, but they also went looking for a break.

After hearing that Railroad Earth would be playing the Aggie, the band did an impromptu basement recording session to create a digital music sampler. The band e-mailed it to every person on Railroad Earth's Web site along with a note asking to open for them at the Aggie show.

Within 10 minutes of hitting the send button, half the members of Railroad Earth had contacted them saying they loved it and asking them to be the opener, WhiteWater Ramble mandolin player Patrick Sites said recently. And because Railroad asked for WhiteWater Ramble specifically they were allowed to play at the Aggie, something that rarely happens to 4-month-old bands.

The band is still working to get opening slots for larger bands, but they've also headlined several of their own shows, and draw impressive crowds, at places such as Mishawaka Amphitheatre.

"They were a little skeptical (at the Aggie), but we had a great show," Sites noted. "It was kind of our coming-out party."

Once bands have made bridges they should be careful not to burn them.

"Respect the venues," Ore advised, recalling a recent run-in with a fledgling band that decided to live it up a bit too much following their show at Denver's Bluebird Theatre and got a lifetime ban from the venue.

"They smashed 30 of our pint glasses on the floor," Ore said. "I know it's rock 'n' roll, but its not 1972 and you're not Motley Crue."

Keeping your ego in check is critical, Wysocki agreed.

"We'll be very blessed to sustain a career doing what we love and what we're passionate about," he said. "Right now, we're doing the best we know how. If it doesn't work out, that's fine. We'll still play - whether we're huge or not."

The band still calls Denver home and has no plans to move to Los Angeles, he added.

"(Bassist Dave Welsh) still lives with his parents," Wysocki cracked.Making it means different things to different people.

For next-big-things like The Fray, it may mean selling millions of records and filling theaters.

"I can see Radio City Music Hall right now, and we're playing there tonight with Ben Folds," Wysocki said. "I get the chills - I can't even imagine that we're going to do that. Minutes ago we met Better Than Ezra and Switchfoot. Now I realize we're in the big leagues."

The Fray is still trying to get used to the idea of being famous, Wysocki said, nervously laughing as he halts to take another picture.

For Campbell, who is still working to get his name out to booking agents and getting opening act gigs, making it as a folksinger simply means making music.

"If I was singing pop songs, then maybe it would be about how many people I can pack in a club and selling lots of records and getting 13-year-olds to put pictures of me up on their walls," he said. "But I personally think that last one would be kind of creepy."

Hindu festival

Hundreds of local Hindus with roots from all corners of India and across the world have been coming together at the Hindu Temple of Greater Orlando to celebrate the female side of divinity in a 10-day community festival of color, folk music, song, dance and worship.

The annual fall festival, which began Tuesday, honors different feminine deities representing facets of the one supreme God for their triumph of good over evil. The festival continues through Wednesday.

The first nine days of the event, marked by worship, dance and devotional song, are called Navaratri, which means "nine nights." It commemorates the nine-day battle and ultimate victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

The 10th and final night, called Dassera, is devoted to worship.

At the temple community hall in Casselberry, a rotating pedestal adorned in colorful flowers displays photos of the female goddesses Durga (representing strength), Lakshmi (representing prosperity and health) and Saraswati (representing knowledge).

The goddesses are paid homage for three consecutive days each, but their combined attributes are recognized as necessary to overcome worldly problems, said temple member Palavi Jahagirdar of Longwood.

"Each day of the nine nights is in honor of the goddess who conquered evil," Jahagirdar said. "All of these are ideals. They conquer the bad."

Jahagirdar noted that the mood of the festival is very upbeat because in India it coincides with the end of the monsoon season and post-harvest time.

As is the tradition in the northwestern Gujarat region of India, a crowd of all ages gathers at the temple community hall to dance around the deities to a lively beat.

The simple, traditional three-step folk dance called garba is infectious, said Sruthi Sarangarajan, 16, of Lake Mary, who likes to bring friends of different cultures to the festival.

"You can dance with old people, young people, anyone. It's really free," said Sruthi, a junior at Seminole High School in Sanford. "It's different from other [festivals] in that it's more vibrant and more participatory. Here, the audience members are the performers."

Sruthi's friend and classmate, Mitali Jahagirdar, 15, said the dancing is exhilarating but often leaves blisters on her feet. That's never enough to keep her from coming back each evening for more, she said.

"You're there and you're dancing your heart away. You completely forget about everything," Mitali, of Longwood, said.

After the garba dancing, celebrants take time to pay their respects to the goddesses by praying, lighting a lamp in worship (aarti) and offering fruits and sweets (prasad).

Afterward, the festivities often continue into the wee hours of the morning with a traditional raas folk dance with colorful, decorated sticks.

Mahendra Kapadia of southwest Orlando is in charge of temple cultural activities and organized this year's event.

Kapadia said that Indian folk bands from Orlando, Daytona Beach and India will provide music for the festival, which last year attracted 500 to 600 celebrants per weeknight and more than 1,200 on the weekend.

On Dassera, the 10th day of the festival, celebrants devote themselves to prayer and worship.

"That's when your attention is solely on God," Mitali said.

Mitali noted that Hinduism is a religion of one God, but that the festival honors the strong, feminine aspects of God manifested in the Mother Goddess Durga and the other goddesses.

"We worship different facets of God. It [the festival] is worshipping the feminine powers of God," said Mitali, whose family originated from Mumbai in Central India.

Color, decoration and a coming together of communities are hallmarks of the festival, which is celebrated differently in different regions of India and around the world.

"Navaratri is a really decorated festival. It's very multicultural within India and outside of India," Sruthi said.

Sruthi said that in southern India, where her family is from, ceremonies emphasize the goddess of knowledge by commemorating teachers on the 10th day.

Ceremonies honoring teachers are performed in other areas of India as well.

Devotional music plays a big part in south Indian celebrations. Devotional singer Dr. Vasundhara Iyengar of Orlando learned a nine-part composition honoring the female deities called the Navavarna kirtanas, which is traditionally sung or chanted in southern India during the festival.

Iyengar, originally from Bangalore, said the intention of the 18th century composer of the kirtanas, Muthuswamy Dikshitar, was to allow all people, regardless of means or education, to partake in the spiritual aspect of the holiday.

"You can just chant this lyric with real feeling and devotion and get the same benefit as performing the ritualistic worship," Iyengar said.

Modern-day celebrations in the West may also fuse traditional dance and music with hip-hop, disco and jazz moves and beats.

Dr. Aravind Pillai of Longwood said the theme of eradicating ignorance through knowledge is consistent in the celebration and in Hinduism.

"The remover of ignorance, darkness, evil -- they are all one and the same -- is knowledge," he said

Podcasting Stars

Self-proclaimed tech geek Brian Reid got an MP3 player for Christmas and decided after fiddling with it for a while to start a little podcast called Sex Talk that focused on one of his passions: gender issues.
The suburban Washington, D.C., stay-at-home dad did a few broadcasts, touching on such sonorous topics as the Roman Catholic Church's stance on female priests, and then gave up back in April when his audience failed to grow beyond a few subscribers.
So imagine his surprise when, during the first week of July, Reid got an e-mail from an Australian reader of his blog congratulating him for having the 53rd-most-popular podcast on iTunes.

And so it went in the first fortnight after Apple Computer issued the software that turned podcasts mainstream. The upgrade to iTunes 4.9 on June 29 gave millions of iPod owners and iTunes customers a simple way to search for and subscribe to podcasts without any other software. Apple counted more than 1 million podcast subscriptions through iTunes in the first two days alone, according to a company press release.

Still, the switch came suddenly and without warning, turning a long list of mom-and-pop online audiocasters into overnight sensations, crashing servers across the nation and minting new internet stars in a way not seen since the early days of blogging.

And, of course, it left folks like Reid scratching their heads. Reid has no idea how his defunct podcast ended up listed in the iTunes directory -- and with an "explicit" label no less. He assumes that label and the Sex Talk name explain how he scaled the charts alongside such brand-name talkers as Air America Radio's Al Franken, Nightline's Ted Koppel and Z100 radio's Elvis Duran.

"I have entirely disappointed all those folks who expected to hear Jenna Jameson's voice and instead heard me," quipped Reid, 30, a freelance writer who has no plans to resume his podcast unless he can make it profitable. "It's very bizarre. The only reason why I found this funny was because I have unlimited bandwidth in my server package. If I were some of the others who got caught unaware, I would probably be apoplectic."

An Apple spokesman did not return several calls for comment.

Few podcasters are angered by the inconvenience -- they have, after all, gained hordes of new listeners -- but Apple's rollout had many wishing they had some notice beforehand. Paul Saurini, whose Denver-based Barefoot Radio podcast focuses largely on news items with some white-trash element to them, had to suddenly upgrade his server bandwidth package from $25 a month for 100 GB to a $300-a-month package for 1,200 GB after the new traffic exceeded his limit.

"I'm really grateful for what they're making happen for me, so I'm not complaining, really," said Saurini, 31. "I just wish I had been forewarned so I could be prepared to take full advantage of it."

Other problems abound. Several podcasts were listed multiple times. Yeast Radio podcaster Madge Weinstein, a Chicago drag queen, griped on one recording during that first week that she wasn't listed under "comedy." Rob Glenn, whose ilovebacon.com podcast is a discussion of news articles and websites he likes, complained that podcasters who weren't in the initial iTunes database had to create full-fledged iTunes accounts complete with a credit card number on file in order to be listed.

Andy Wibbles, whose Andymatic podcast deals with gay issues, agreed that Apple's rollout method led to "a lot of technical glitches."

"They added a whole bunch of data to the podcast format that's Apple-proprietary," said Wibbles, 30, an online marketing instructor in Chicago. "There are a bunch of tags that are only for the iTunes feed. They made up their own tags. I think the Apple thing is going to be great -- it's going to get the software installed on thousands of machines. But it's a double-edged sword."

Wibbles said that some of Apple's tactics favored big, well-known media outlets like ABC News, National Public Radio and Newsweek, all of which are fixtures in the top 100 list.

Yet while podcasts like Reid's Sex Talk and other early listers have dropped back from that pack, others have remained perennials in the rankings despite no prior following.

One is Cinecast, a movie show by a pair of Chicago film critics, only this time instead of Ebert and Roeper it's 30-year-olds Adam Kempenaar and Sam Hallgren. The show by Kempenaar, a web producer for the Chicago Blackhawks, and Hallgren, an intern at WBEZ-FM, was recommended on ex-MTV veejay and podcast pioneer Adam Curry's influential weekly Podfinder show in June and now has an estimated 50,000 subscribers.

Kempenaar credits their show's clear organization with its success. Unlike many podcasts, which feature stream-of-consciousness ramblings from hosts, the duo start by reviewing the latest movies, read some listener mail, offer their competing top-five lists in whatever the week's film category is and conclude with a Massacre Theater contest in which they read some dialogue and let listeners guess what film it's from.

"I sampled some other podcasts and decided we needed to do a show that's formatted the way you expect on the radio," said Kempenaar, who started the podcast in the spring as a hobby that gave him an excuse to tell his wife he needed to go to the movies with pal Hallgren. "We just hoped at first someone would hear it and like it."

The switch has also been a boon for folks who don't even see themselves as podcasters, like Las Vegas-based Daily Noise hosts Jimmy Diggs and Kaan Soler.

"We're doing a live show, but podcasting has created an archive for us," said Diggs, whose two-hour show includes interviews and Howard Stern-like shtick. "Now more people are hearing us whenever they want."

Podcasters aren't the only ones with issues. Now that podcasting is hitting the mainstream, listeners are realizing the limits of the current technology. There's as yet no way to bookmark content of podcasts so listeners can bounce to the part they're interested in as they do on blogs, and the iPod's forward button is notoriously slow and unreliable, critics say.

And, like in the blogosphere, much of the content is amateur and mediocre.

"I'd like to find one or two (podcasts) in comedy that are actually funny or even mildly amusing," said Frank Flynn, who worked for a decade for Apple and is now a programmer for MarketingGenius.com. "Most of this is like listening in on someone's phone call, but not as spicy."

Podcasting Gold Rush Is On

The podosphere may be virgin terrain for the online world, but already the race is on to figure out whether there's any real money to be made through the new medium.

Consider the vast variety of approaches that have cropped up since Apple's iTunes upgrade this summer started delivering thousands of new listeners to podcasters who once toiled in obscurity.

GrapeRadio podcaster Brian Clark is now gulping down about $1,000 a week from sponsors of his show for wine hobbyists. Grant Baciocco of the fiction serial The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd sells show-themed buttons and T-shirts and offers guest-voice roles for $50.

Josh of Josh in Japan is asking for PayPal donations from fans of his tales of expatriate life, though so far only $14 has rolled in. And Jimmy Diggs uses his Vegas-based Daily Noise as a traffic generator for his internet radio site, LVRocks.com, where sponsors pay for banner ads. (Editor's note: LVRocks.com hosts the author's podcast, Vegas S&M)

"There isn't much information out there on how to do this," said Tim Bourquin, producer of the sports-themed Endurance Radio podcast. "It's a work in progress, how this all works."

Endurance Radio was sponsored for a time by Gatorade and is now carrying ads from Fleet Feet Sports, a chain of running-shoe stores. Buoyed by their success, Bourquin and his brother Emile now offer tips on how to profit from podcasting on their weekly Podcast Brothers show, and their website provides a boilerplate contract for podcasters to use with advertisers. Bourquin is also organizing the Portable Media Expo in November in Ontario, California, to teach other podcasters how to "monetize" their shows.

One of the biggest challenges, says Bourquin, is that most potential sponsors don't even know what a podcast is.

"I've learned not to go in and say, 'We have a podcast and you should advertise,' because their eyes will glaze over," said Bourquin. "Instead, say, 'We've got this online radio program.' It's not quite correct, but people understand that a little better. And then you tell them the neat thing is that people can get the show automatically downloaded onto their MP3 player."

In addition to polishing their pitches to advertisers, podcasters are experimenting with different business models. Some are considering offering part of the podcast for free and the rest for a fee. Others hope that a network will buy their shows for syndication on broadcast or satellite radio, thereby plucking them out of the podosphere altogether.

Diggs, of LVRocks.com, says advertisers are more persuaded when he tells them the site is getting more than 1 million hits a month than if he tries to estimate the number of unknown listeners downloading the shows he broadcasts. But some of the podcasters he hosts are finding success in getting commercial radio-show-style sponsors, including Renegades of Comedy, which landed an ad from the Vegas strip joint Cheetahs.

By and large, though, local business sponsorships don't work well, as Sam Hallgren and Adam Kempenaar of the breakout hit podcast Cinecast discovered when they landed ChicagoMixer.com as their first advertiser. The site, a dating service for Windy City singles, saw little increased traffic for its money, and Cinecast is now sponsored by DVD vendor MoviePassions.com, a more logical and less geographically dependant fit.

"Twenty percent of our listeners are from 59 other countries, so something specific to one location didn't turn out to be the best sponsor for us," Kempenaar said. "I wasn't really surprised, but this is new, so it's all trial and error."

With so much uncertainty surrounding the format, it's perhaps no surprise that few major companies have jumped into the podcast sponsorship game so far, and those that have are supporting tried-and-true news and entertainment providers. Z100, the New York radio station, signed Virgin Mobile for commercials on its podcasts of comedy bits and interviews from its morning show. ABC News has Verizon Online USA on board for podcasts of the audio of Nightline. And Slate had Chrysler plugging cars at the top of its daily podcast, in which editor Andy Bowers reads a story from the site.

"Chrysler was excited about supporting this new technology and being identified with Slate's launch of it," said Slate publisher Cliff Sloan in an e-mail. "Chrysler ran other ad campaigns on Slate at the same time. In general, we're finding that advertisers are looking for new and different ways to reach people."

Other brand-name podcasters see the podcast itself as the advertisement. Fox Entertainment produces a weekly two-minute podcast that that does nothing but promote upcoming episodes of The Simpsons and Family Guy and yet often tops the iTunes charts. And Bravo has created podcasts featuring comic Kathy Griffin of My Life on the D List and the stars of Queer Eye For the Straight Guy that encourage listeners to watch those shows.

"It's an informational tool that extends our brand and our reach," said Frances Berwick, Bravo senior vice president for programming and production. "It's another way of enhancing the viewer experience. Our viewers tend to be upscale and early adopters of new technology."

Independent podcasters don't have the assurance of a built-in audience whose demographics they can rely upon. In fact, they struggle to even accurately count the size or makeup of their audiences -- information that advertisers covet. Some have rough ideas based on e-mail responses, site hits and, if they're lucky, download figures, but they say they can't tell how many people are listening through Apple's iTunes service, which doesn't share its statistics.

That's frustrating for folks like Cinecast's Hallgren and Kempenaar, whose show has been featured a couple of times on iTunes' homepage. The duo believe that iTunes is caching Cinecast on Apple's servers, and while they're grateful for the attention, they say that as a result users who subscribe to the podcast aren't downloading the program from the Cinecast server, making it impossible to accurately count the audience.

Denver-based Barefoot Radio co-host Paul Saurini, who is trying to gauge listener demographics through an online survey, is similarly delighted by the exposure Apple provides, but frustrated by the company's coyness.

"I'd even pay iTunes if they'd share the stats with me," said Saurini, 31, a self-described former stoner who chats about weird news items and plays music on his podcast. "I would love to learn how can I take advantage of their system better so I can get more listeners. They should realize that indie podcasters would pay for that information."

Even an appearance on the iTunes Top 25 podcast list or Top 100 download chart doesn't provide a solid metric, because Apple is mum on how the rankings are decided, and discrepancies between the two lists have gone unexplained. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment for this report, and specifically refused to answer questions about the ranking system.

That leaves many would-be podcasting entrepreneurs on shifting ground.

Saurini, who plans to attend the Portable Media Expo, says he's unsure how to approach advertisers, so he's hoping one will hear his show and decide to invest in him. But he realizes his podcast, driven largely by his and his co-host's personalities and humor, could be a harder sell than topic-specific programs focused on running or movies.

Still, the passive approach sometimes works. Tower Records, for example, surveyed the podosphere for music-related podcasts they could sponsor and settled on two, Coverville and The Nashville Nobody Knows, for their first ventures. The selection came out of the blue for those podcasters.

"Basically, we love podcasting," said Tower marketing vice president Mike Jansta in an e-mail. "We were looking for a way to associate Tower Records with some of the unique and high-quality podcasts that are out there.... Coverville and The Nashville Nobody Knows were two podcasts that really stood out to us. The quality of the commentary and content of both are fabulous."

Many early podcasters say they're in it for the long haul and expect profits to come later.

"I think there is a lot of money to be made out of this, but it's in its infancy," said Mark Vavrick of Renegades of Comedy. "There's a lot of people with computers, but not everybody knows these shows are out there yet."

Rap Marketing Comes to Nerdcore

Tupac and Biggie, move over. A new hip-hop feud is brewing that glamorizes not guns and 'hos but Java and secure encryption algorithms.
While gangsta rap is seen as celebrating the violence and aggression that claimed two of its brightest stars, "geeksta" rap is a hip-hop
genre celebrating coding skills and school grades. Also dubbed "nerdcore," this branch of hip-hop is for geeks, by geeks. Geeksta rappers
adopt the same combative verbal-assault stylings of their forerunners, but bust rhymes about elite script compiling and dope machine code.
The term was first coined in 2000 by nerdy New York rapper MC Frontalot in a track of the same name. Nerdcore now refers to artists
waxing lyrical about topics as disparate as engineering and Lord of the Rings.

In recent months, the field has seen a growing number of releases from computer science labs, where egocentric
grad students show off their Ph.D. credentials in tracks like "Have to Code" and "End of File.""The stigma that was
once attached to computer geeks and role-playing nerds is diminishing incredibly fast," said "digital gangster" Bryce
Case Jr., aka ytcracker. "It has almost become trendy to have skills on a computer. Rather than guns and 'hos,
I speak about DDOS attacks and camgirls."

The self-proclaimed "#1 greatest computer science gangsta rapper ever" is MC Plus+, a geeksta
leading light whose moniker comes from the C++ programming language.The Purdue University, Indiana,
Ph.D. candidate and "CS pimp," whose album Algorhythms was recorded with pirated software, calls
himself "the Tupac of the computer science world."
MC Plus+ rattles off lines like: "I'm encrypting shit like every single day; sending it across a network in a safe way;
protecting messages to make my pay; if you hack me you're guilty under DMCA."
But Plus+'s flow is dissed on the opposite coast by geeksta peers like Dan Maynes-Aminzade, aka
Monzy, a 25-year-old Minnesota-born Stanford grad student who recorded a dis track specifically to insult his rap rival.
"Our raps are filled with braggadocio, but instead of boasting about our bitches, blunts, Benzes
or Benjamins, maybe we talk about our math skills or the efficiency of our code," Monzy said.
Monzy said competition between universities and academic departments is nothing new,
and rivalries are a big part of the hip-hop tradition.
"Feuds between Nas and Jay-Z, Biggie and Tupac and 50 Cent and Ja Rule have received a lot of coverage and generally
result in more exposure for both artists, so I decided to bring this to the world of CS gangsta rap by starting a
feud with MC Plus+," Monzy explained.

Such talk could put fans on alert for a spiral of tit-for-tat nerdcore violence -- like that which marred the infamous
intercoastal rivalry between the Death Row and Bad Boy labels and culminated in the killings of their two top artists.
Plus+, who writes most of his rhymes in class, said he is about to release an insult track written in response to the Monzy's opening salvo.

"I saw two of my favorite rappers, Tupac and Biggie, get killed for no reason," he said. "But it's like this, man -- when
you're at the top, there is jealousy and, needless to say, haters are coming at you. I'm gonna tell Monzy:
'You ain't even on my level' -- you got to know me and only me."

The aggression also mirrors 1998's war of words between LL Cool J and Canibus, a computer science major and tech-centric rhymester who fabricated a feud to generate publicity, according to Journal of Hip-Hop editor Andrew Ryan, who teaches both computers and hip-hop culture at George Mason University, Virginia.

"Computer scientists, by training, use divide and conquer in almost any task," said Ryan. "Rap music, with all its complexities, provides (them with) the perfect conundrum.

"I don't think this new subculture will really stick, though," Ryan added. "If the genre is to succeed, you're going to need some females."

Nerdcore fans, meanwhile, are happy to identify with a music that speaks their own language.

Henry Lin, a geeksta fan and graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley, said: "The lyrics are full of inside jokes that only those knowledgeable in computer science would understand. Besides, some songs do a good job of capturing the everyday struggles of computer science majors."

Frontalot, a New York designer who declined to give his real name, conceded he has "mediocre" mic skills, but said nerds can out-hip hip-hop's true superstars.

"I think CS graduates have a better chance than most rappers at calculating and devising hitherto unheard rhyme pairings," he said. "50 Cent has dance clubs and oral sex, we have awesome video cards."

Warner Music Group digital strategy chief Michael Nash said today that the major record labels could easily cut off the iTunes Music Store if Apple CEO Steve Jobs doesn't budge in the song pricing battle.

"What if Jobs says 39 cents or 29 cents per download—what then?" Nash asked during a panel discussion at the CTIA Telecomms Show. "The industry can say, OK we'll cut him off—very few people people buy music from digital downloads." The music executive said Jobs will have to find another way to help sell iPods. "[Jobs] will figure out another model," he said.

Nash also said that the music industry has let Apple get away with too much dominance in paid digital downloads. "The industry got together and said 'We don't want another MTV'. Well, now we've got another MTV, in Apple. And we have to deal with it," he said.

I believe the real problem is that the Music Industry is envious that somebody else is better at selling their music. Notice how they don't mention that they already get the majority of the money from a 99 cent song, so they're not hurting considering iTMS has sold over 500 million songs.

Because people were, and still are, tired of buying a full CD with 10 crappy songs to get one or two good songs, iTunes has provided a service that has proven very popular with consumers. The Music Industry just seems pissed at the fact they may actually have to provide a better product creatively if they are to sell complete albums.

I for one will be the first to go back to filesharing to get songs if they decide to cut off iTunes from their music.

We Mexican owners of iPods don't EVEN have a iTMS yet (yes, that sucks). I didn't need an iTMS to decide purchasing an iPod. I bought it in order to have my OWN ripped CD collection (more than 6000 songs and counting) in it. All of my CDs are legally purchased, in the old-fashioned way. I'd buy digital songs if I could.

I still buy physical CDs and always will if music executives stop selling us "economedia" versions of CDs (terrible sound) in order to low prices. Now I find disturbing the new "copy-controlled" disks.

And they still complain about the overwhelming piracy in Latin America? Are they blind, insane, or just brainless?

All of the above, more likely.

What a moron. I'm not going back into a store to buy a cd. I'm not getting rid of my ipod, because I've tried the others… so, it's either iTunes, or, well, the other less legal option. If anyone knows of any free download services that are not illegal, post them up, I'd be interested to buy music from someon not RIAA invovled.

Besides that, how can you compare this to MTV? MTV barely has music on it anymore—and they've whored themselves out to the windows media format a long time ago, snubbing the design community. Maybe MTV 1985, I'll give him that.

.99 cents per song is ok. I personaly think that it should be even cheapper, there is almost no cost per song compered for a regular store.

I personaly prefer to buy CDs, but for those single songs (CD's with only one good music), buying on the Net is ok.

I personaly like P2P programs, we share music! (share is totaly diferent of stoling and piracy).

I think that share songs on P2P programs is the same as goning to a friends house and record a CD on a cassete tape.

I'm not a Jobs lover, but I think that his is doing the right thing trying to mantain the price of the songs. I even think that it should be cheapper.

1 album on ITunes is around 10 dolars and one album on amazon is the same price (so I prefer the CD, so I can ripp it and mantain the CD).

well, I live in Mexico and rarelly buy CD's, when iTunes Music store came It was great, now there isnt a Latin America Music Store but I have A US credit card so I have been able to buy 1164 songs up to date, I dont think of buying CD's again, so if you cut iTunes you loose me as a customer

I don't think Apple is quite as smart or as altruistic in its efforts as people here think they are.

The price is gonna go up—that's a fact of life we gotta accept. Simply put, if the business model is gonna shift from trying to sell albums to selling singles, the price of a single is gonna have to go up.

As for the people who always threaten to go back to illegal downloading if the price goes up—I don't think you ever stopped illegally downloading.

The fight now is not to convince people to legally buy music online, the mission for the Labels is to discover how much they will pay. Apple's mission has been to see how much we will pay for an iPod—I don't see anyone complaining about that.

If the iPod had an FM tuner you wouldn't have to buy any of the hot songs—they play on the air all day long.

While it would be a negative to lose WBR from the iTunes store, it will hurt WBR more. I respect Apple for standing their ground and sticking up for the consumer. However ,it is WBR's product and they can charge what they want.

The MTV comment is funny as I've actually heard it from various label execs. Really they're just complaining because they can't control the entire puzzle and strong-arm consumers in to paying $30 for a CD.

No matter what, the labels will need to work with other players. Sometimes this means that they must be fair to the consumer too.

Soon most artists will go at it alone and bypass the labels altogether. Trust me… they are not helping.

I would love to see these c o c k sucker CEOs TRY to cut iTunes off. "What if Steve Jobs said 29 cents or 39 cents for a song?" (Or something like that.) That wouldn't work now, and I hate when people exaggerate things. The iPod is at a fair price right now. So Jobs isn't really scamming anyone. Also, the people I know DID stop downloading illegally, not just because iTunes is a good product, but because AAC is much better than MP3 and not always to you get the file you think you're getting on P2P services, mostly because they're labeled incorrectly (most of the time on purpose), and if you do get the song you want then it is in some s h i t t y bitrate that makes it sound terrible. Maybe the record labels are right on one hand--older music should sell for less, but new music shouldn't sell for more. With no packaging costs, then they're making a bundle. Period.

If both sides want to make money, which I think they do, they should LISTEN to the CONSUMER!! Hello?? I think the price point is good where it is and it does have some flexibility as with any growing market. The music execs need to understand that they are the problem why people commit piracy. They drove people away by overpriced CD's and poor quality of music on the CD's. If they want people to come back to buying music legally, they need to come off of their high horse and LISTEN to the CONSUMER who pays for their salaries.

I personally have not bought a CD from a store in over 3 years. Yes I do rip CD from friends occasionally but usually I only keep the few songs I am interested in. This is the same on iTunes. You can buy the 1 or 2 songs per album you like or the whole thing if you like the band. I feel 99 cents is just right. Cause at the store you pay the same and there is packaging. The music companies are making so much more from iTunes and others, they are crazy to show this side. 1.49 per song would be the most I would ever pay if required beyond that I might just write my own music when I want something new. They are greedy bastards, living in big houses with new cars. Who is buying the music and paying for that… mostly us people just scraping by. And yes we can hear music for free all day long on the radio and satellite radio as well. Who are they fooling. I hope Apple (Jobs) tells them where to stick it.

The record labels have benefitted from the gravy train for decades and realizing that they will be irrelevant before long has them grasping at straws ...

The ability to make perfect digital copies has had consequences that they never dreamed of when CD's were first introduced ...

My hope is that Apple/iTunes becomes a label and splits the 99 cents / download between the artist and Apple in a fair manner ... create a world ITMS without borders ... regional restrictions in terms of download availability is crazy in this day and age and is only in place because of the antiquated rules of the existing players.

do they actually believe themselves when they claim that iTMS drives the iPod sales? it's more like the other way around. I know plenty of people who have iPod but have never bothered buying from iTMS. Many of them claims that its not good enough quality for the price. If they raise the price, iTMS better be delivering CD quality music. And I know plenty of people whose primary use of the iPod is not for music. I find that I spend most of my time listening to podcasts and audiobooks. Alternative media is already emerging. New business model will develop and independent artists are still figuring out new ways to get their music to the masses. The record industry needs to get ahead of that curve instead of raising prices.

Musicgiants, a high-def digital music download service is all set to launch on Wednesday.
Billed as a download service for audiophiles, the 15-person company will offer songs that
are uncompressed and are encoded using windows media technology at 1100 kbps. In
comparison, Apple's iTunes and others like Real's Rhapsody offer music at a compression
rate which is a tad lower than the CD-quality, mostly to keep the file sizes down. Musicgiants'
business model is predicated on widespread deployment of broadband and speeds which
can handle the big-phat downloads. So far, the service works only on Windows PCs.

"If you're listening to compressed music using your iPod earbuds, you won't notice much
difference [from a CD]," says Scott Bahneman, founder and chief executive of tiny startup
MusicGiants. "But once you play it on a good home stereo, the difference is huge." Even
an empty 40-gigabyte hard drive would hold only 100 CDs or so. A 1-terabyte drive from
LaCie USA, may be more like it, if you've got $949 with nothing better to do. (Business Week)

The songs cost $1.29 a download, and you have to pay $50 a year membership fee.
The Nevada-based company claims its sound quality is seven times that of other download services.

BitTorrent gets $8.75M from venture-capital firm

BitTorrent, developer of one of the most popular software programs for acquiring free video and other large files on the Internet, has raised $8.75 million from a venture-capital firm.

BitTorrent says it will use the funds from DCM-Doll Capital Management to improve its infrastructure and make it more appealing to Hollywood.

The investment comes as file-sharing companies - most of them tiny start-ups - are scrambling to legitimize. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that file-sharing service Grokster and StreamCast Networks, which operates the Morpheus service, could be held liable for their users' actions.

"The piracy business is not something anyone can make money on," says Ashwin Navin, who co-founded BitTorrent with Bram Cohen. "We want to distribute paid and ad-supported content, using this technology."

BitTorrent is the second-most-popular file-sharing program, with 33% market share, according to research firm CacheLogic, after eDonkey's 50% share. BitTorrent specializes in helping users nab huge files quickly.

Navin concedes that some users download movies without paying for them but says BitTorrent isn't the only technology that can be used illegitimately. "You can also use a browser to view child porn and Microsoft Word to cut and paste and plagiarize," he says.

He says the company is meeting with movie studios and other copyright holders to negotiate use of BitTorrent to distribute content.

Separately Monday, Internet search giant Google started a four-day webcasting of the pilot episode of the UPN TV network's new Chris Rock sitcom, Everybody Hates Chris. It's the first time Google has presented entertainment programming at its new video project, video.google.com. (Related item: Google offers prime-time video streamcasts)

Michael McGuire, an analyst at research firm GartnerG2, says Hollywood is getting the message that fighting new technology may not necessarily be the best answer. Since the record labels began suing song-swappers in 2003, use of file-sharing programs has skyrocketed.

In August, 9.6 million were logged onto file-sharing networks at any given time, up from 6.8 million the previous August, according to Internet measurement firm BigChampagne. File-sharing software is "a very efficient way to distribute content," McGuire says.

Google and Yahoo, which is also actively working to bring entertainment content to the Web, offer content that can be viewed online but not downloaded to a PC or other device. Navin says downloading is more efficient, because you can watch it anytime.

"Google has proven that if you have traffic, you can make money," says David Chao, DCM's managing general partner. "We have 45 million users worldwide and a huge amount of traffic. We know that p2p advertising is a real business now."

In a previous letter, I stated that there is something presumptuous about healing prayer request's shabby mendacity and sneaking duplicity. That will be my position in this letter, as well. Read on, gentle reader, and hear what I have to say. Healing prayer request is entirely gung-ho about metagrobolism because it lacks more pressing soapbox issues. There is a simple answer to the question of what to do about healing prayer request's revenge fantasies. The difficult part is in implementing the answer. The answer is that we must present a clear picture of what is happening, what has happened, and what is likely to happen in the future. Healing prayer request has been known to "prove" statistically that it has achieved sainthood. As you might have suspected, its proof is flawed. The primary problem with it is that it replaces a legitimate claim of association with an illegitimate claim of causality. Consequently, healing prayer request's "proof" demonstrates only that there are inarticulate practitioners of propagandism in our midst. I trust that I have not shocked any of you by writing that. However, I do realize that some of my readers may feel that much of what I have penned about healing prayer request in this letter is heartless and in violation of our Christian duty to love everyone. If so, I can say only that healing prayer request should learn to appreciate what it has instead of feeling so oppressed because it can't do everything it wants, every time it wants to. All of this once again proves the old saying that by any objective standard, healing prayer request's contrivances are thoroughly narrow-minded.

If you are stimulated by new ideas and if you can think for yourself rather than simply accept what Latin Music dishes out, I think you will find this letter of interest. So, without further ado, I present you with this all-important piece of information: Latin Music just reported that "the norm" shouldn't have to worry about how the exceptions feel. Do you think that that's merely sloppy reporting on Latin Music's part? I don't. I think that it's a deliberate attempt to besmirch the memory of some genuine historic figures. Latin Music is like a magician who produces a dove in one hand, while the other hand is busy trying to pour a few drops of wormwood into our general enthusiasm. As stated earlier, everybody is probably familiar with the cliche that it frustrates Latin Music that it can't shut me up. Well, there's a lot of truth in that cliche. Latin Music is typical of demented peddlers of snake-oil remedies in its wild invocations to the irrational, the magic, and the fantastic to dramatize its epigrams. An inner voice tells me that if this letter did nothing else but serve as a beacon of truth, it would be worthy of reading by all right-thinking people. However, this letter's role is much greater than just to tell you things that Latin Music doesn't want you to know.
Come on, Latin Music; I know you're capable of thoughtful social behavior. Latin Music claims to have turned over a new leaf shortly after getting caught trying to create anomie. This claim is an outright lie that is still being circulated by Latin Music's expositors. The truth is that the irony is that Latin Music's most self-serving nostrums are also its most adversarial. As the French say, "Les extremes se touchent."
Latin Music has planted its secret agents everywhere. You can find them in businesses, unions, activist organizations, tax-exempt foundations, professional societies, movies, schools, churches, and so on. Not only does this subversive approach enhance Latin Music's ability to advocate jaded circulars but it also provides irrefutable evidence that it is an interesting organization. On the one hand, Latin Music likes to give lunatics control of the asylum. But on the other hand, it wants us to feel sorry for the insecure doomsday prophets who focus too much on one side of the equation and not enough on the broader perspective of things. I claim we should instead feel sorry for their victims, all of whom know full well that Latin Music's central role in the promotion of homicidal, sick escapism dates back a number of years. It follows from this that it has written volumes about how everyone who doesn't share its beliefs is a scurrilous politicaster deserving of death and damnation. Don't believe a word of it, though. The truth is that its habitués are unified under a common goal. That goal is to exercise both subtlety and thoroughness in managing both the news and the entertainment that gets presented to us. What Latin Music is incapable of seeing is that you should not ask, "When it looks in the mirror in the morning, does Latin Music see more than the same, muzzy-headed face that all mendacious adulterers share?", but rather, "Why doesn't Latin Music point a critical finger at itself for a change?". The latter question is the better one to ask, because it's our responsibility to make plans and carry them out. That's the first step in trying to call for proper disciplinary action against it and its shills, and it's the only way to find the inner strength to provide an antidote to contemporary manifestations of irascible despotism.
If you look back over some of my older letters, you'll see that I predicted that Latin Music would weaken our mental and moral fiber. And, as I predicted, it did. But you know, that was not a difficult prediction to make. Anyone who has bothered to learn even a little about Latin Music could have made the same prediction. Here are a few points to ponder:
Latin Music's concept of team play is sideline sulking.
Latin Music's agendas are a quixotic orgy of colonialism.
Once you get past the initial crowd-pleasing pranks, the remaining parts of Latin Music's squibs are merely the same irrational vision that it has been espousing for years.
Those points may at first seem unrelated, but when you connect the dots, it becomes clear that like a verbal magician, Latin Music knows how to lie without appearing to be lying, how to bury secrets in mountains of garbage-speak.
As if you didn't know, Latin Music is addicted to the feeling of power, to the idea of controlling people. Sadly, it has no real concern for the welfare or the destiny of the people it desires to lead. Latin Music's adherents claim to have no choice but to influence the attitudes of dominant culture towards any environment or activity that is predominantly sententious. I wish there were some way to help these miserable, sadistic turncoats. They are outcasts, lost in a world they didn't make and don't understand. Latin Music truly believes that we can change the truth if we don't like it the way it is. It is just such yellow-bellied megalomania, putrid egoism, and intellectual aberrancy that stirs Latin Music to censor by caricature and preempt discussion by stereotype. Don't be fooled: The fact of the matter is that I'm sure Latin Music wouldn't want me to eavesdrop on its meetings. So why does it want to destroy our youths' ability to relax, reflect, study, and meditate? Whatever the answer, everything I've said so far is by way of introduction to the key point I want to make in this letter. My key point is that its fantasy is to reinforce the impression that amoral rubes -- as opposed to Latin Music's forces -- are striving to require religious services around the world to begin with "Latin Music is great; Latin Music is good; we thank Latin Music for our daily food". Latin Music dreams of a world that grants it such a freedom with no strings attached. Welcome to the world of adversarialism! In that nightmare world it has long since been forgotten that by Latin Music's standards, if you have morals, believe that character counts, and actually raise your own children -- let alone teach them to be morally fit -- you're definitely a goofy apostate. My standards -- and I suspect yours as well -- are quite different from its. For instance, I unmistakably believe that Latin Music's faithfuls believe that people don't mind having their communities turned into war zones. Although it is perhaps impossible to change the perspective of those who have such beliefs, I wish nevertheless to make an impartial and well-informed evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of Latin Music's histrionics.
I believe, way deep down, that Latin Music might exploit the masses any day now. What are we to do then? Place blinders over our eyes and hope we don't see the horrible outcome? Every time Latin Music gets caught trying to create a global workers plantation overseen by transnational corporations who have no more concern for the human rights of those who produce their products or services than Latin Music has for its goombahs, it promises it'll never do so again. Subsequently, its encomiasts always jump in and explain that Latin Music really shouldn't be blamed even if it does, because, as they think, Man's eternal search for Truth is a challenge to be avoided at all costs.
I decidedly reject Latin Music's demands, but, as you know, I know more about particularism than most people. You might even say that I'm an expert on the subject. I can therefore state with confidence that Latin Music's notions have created a power-drunk universe devoid of logic and evidence. Only within this universe does it make sense to say that the kids on the playground are happy to surrender to the school bully. Only within this universe does it make sense to foment profligate forms of political tyranny. And, only if we perform noble deeds can we destroy this squalid universe of its and establish clear, justifiable definitions of insurrectionism and phallocentrism so that you can defend a decision to take action when its compeers reinforce the concept of collective guilt that is the root of all prejudice. Although Latin Music babbles on and on about materialism, it has no more conception of it than any other possession-obsessed catty-type. On the issue of metagrobolism, Latin Music is wrong again. Sure, its maudlin, kissy-pooh, feel-good, touchy-feely morals are actually quite intrusive when you look at them a bit closer. But what I wrote just a moment ago is not the paranoid rambling of a dissolute, lawless wacko. It's a fact.
Many people respond to Latin Music's xenophobic principles in the same way that they respond to television dramas. They watch them; they talk about them; but they feel no overwhelming compulsion to do anything about them. That's why I insist we counteract the subtle, but pervasive, social message that says that an open party with unlimited access to alcohol can't possibly outgrow the host's ability to manage the crowd. Latin Music's attitude is definitely, "You don't agree with me; therefore, you must be a socially inept, headstrong sluggard". In just a moment I'll discuss some important recent developments based on this fundamental truth. First, however, I want to add a bit to what I wrote previously. I have to wonder where Latin Music got the idea that it is my view that the purpose of life is self-gratification. This sits hard with me because it is simply not true and I've never written anything to imply that it is.
When was the last time you heard Latin Music mention that it, like many other impetuous, slimy vandals, has joined in with the chorus of furies who have been tearing away at the remains of rationality since the dawn of Derrida? Probably never. That's why its crotchets have experienced a considerable amount of evolution (or perhaps more accurately, genetic drift) over the past few weeks. They used to be simply self-satisfied. Now, not only are they both simple-minded and jejune, but they also serve as unequivocal proof that it's easy for armchair philosophers to theorize about Latin Music and about hypothetical solutions to our Latin Music problem. It's an entirely more difficult matter, however, when one considers that it is not just dysfunctional. It is unbelievably, astronomically dysfunctional. What I find frightening is that some academics actually believe Latin Music's line that its campaigns are our final line of defense against tyrrany. In this case, "academics" refers to a stratum of the residual intelligentsia surviving the recession of its demotic base, not to those seekers of truth who understand that I wonder if Latin Music really believes the things it says. It knows they're not true, doesn't it? I've never gotten a clear and honest answer to that question from Latin Music. But what is clear is that I can honestly suggest how it ought to behave. Ultimately, however, the burden of acting with moral rectitude lies with Latin Music itself. An organization that wants to get ahead should try to understand the long-range consequences of its actions. Latin Music has never had that faculty. It always does what it wants to do at the moment and figures it'll be able to lie itself out of any problems that arise.
If you think that this is humorous or exaggerated, you're wrong. I maintain that the blatant ignorance and social maladjustment of Latin Music's apologues will equip abusive, wayward adolescents with flame throwers, hand grenades, and heat-seeking missiles by the next full moon, even though that presupposes a dialectical intertwinement to which a brazen turn of mind is impervious. Shooting one's mouth off in a public forum on the basis of flimsy facts is neither prudent nor smart. Surprisingly, the courts and our elected officials are way ahead of Latin Music in embracing this simple fact. Throughout human history, the most sanctimonious criticasters I've ever seen have always been revolting. So it should come as no surprise that Latin Music has a natural talent for complaining. It can find any aspect of life and whine about it for hours upon hours. Latin Music is planning to reduce religion to a consumer item in a spiritual supermarket. This does not bode well for the future, because I have often maintained that reasonable people can reasonably disagree. Unfortunately, when dealing with Latin Music and its lieutenants, that claim assumes facts not in evidence. So let me claim instead that if Latin Music were to use more accessible language, then a larger number of people would be able to understand what it's saying. The downside for Latin Music, of course, is that a larger number of people would also understand that I have no idea why it makes such a big fuss over vigilantism. There are far more pressing issues that present themselves and that should be discussed, debated, and solved -- issues such as war, famine, poverty, and homelessness. There is also the lesser issue that Latin Music contends that everyone and everything discriminates against it -- including the writing on the bathroom stalls -- and that, therefore, its beliefs (as I would certainly not call them logically reasoned arguments) are a breath of fresh air amid our modern culture's toxic cloud of chaos. This bizarre pattern of thinking leads to strange conclusions. For example, it convinces subhuman perverts (as distinct from the disruptive, incompetent theologasters who prefer to chirrup while hopping from cloud to cloud in Nephelococcygia) that the boogeyman is going to get us if we don't agree to Latin Music's demands. In reality, contrariwise, Latin Music's metanarratives, while ideologically grounded in a rhetoric and practice of exclusionism, are surrounded by a cloak of secrecy and "plausible denial". To cap that off, at this point in the letter, I had planned to tell you that Latin Music and its patsies are social pariahs and should be ostracized. However, one of my colleagues pointed out that it goes ballistic every time I so much as hint that it is an actuarial certainty that it will impair the practice of democracy sooner than you think. Hence, I discarded the discourse I had previously prepared and substituted the following discussion, in which I argue that Latin Music demands obeisance from its janissaries. Then, once they prove their loyalty, Latin Music forces them to poke and pry into every facet of our lives. In summary, it is my prayer that people everywhere will join me in my quest to provide you with a holistic and thematic history of Latin Music's headlong, inane press releases.
